Since the beginning of the month September 2024a special container was installed at the recycling center of Loudéac (Côtes-d’Armor) so that users can drop off their recoverable items which they have no or no longer use. It benefits “Second life”, the local recycling center.
Agreement with Loudéac community
“I am happy that the community of communes signed the agreement with us in August 2023,” smiles Nicolas Le Querré, the director of “Second Life”. We still had to wait a year for this “reuse box” to be installed.
Loudéac Communauté Bretagne Center has installed a sign to clearly inform users of the recycling center about the correct use of the box.
Significant tonnages
A law of 2015 imposes on communities a plan to reduce tonnage by 50% of residual waste deposited in recycling centers in 2025, compared to 2020.
It’s about reducing waste before it’s even considered waste.
And the Second Life activity contributes significantly to this: “I weigh at the weighbridge each time to calculate the tonnage recovered at the end of the month”.
From the first month, in September, he recovered 2,700 kg of objects placed in the box. In October, 2 850 kg ! “And that’s only at the recycling center, because besides that, there are collections from individuals, people who bring contributions to the store…”
In view of his contribution to thewaste reduction effortNicolas Le Querré would find it legitimate to “receive a subsidy” in return for the weight that is subtracted from the contributions to the recycling center.
“For the moment, things are going well”
In practice, people generally have a good understanding of the process of using the Second Life container.
Although it has already happened once or twice that “people show up with a full trailer of unusable things and put it all mixed together in the container. We open a moldy box – boom, the mouse comes out… But overall, it’s okay: it’s clean, tidy…”
“Last time, there was a dryer: it takes two people to carry it. The agents at the recycling center are friendly, they give me a helping hand when they can.”
But for the moment, it's not possible to hire right away. “We have to pay the rent for the new premises, free up Gaëlle’s salary…”
To achieve this, the collective interest cooperative society (SCIC) must manage to generate a minimum of €12,500 per month. “I count 15,000 to be a little more comfortable. It's playable! In October we made almost €7,000, with a space of 125 m2, whereas here, we are going to multiply the surface area by four. So, €15,000 is not surprising.”
Flea market and house clearance
Nicolas Le Querré also intends to embark on a house clearance. “For the moment, we only do free selective collections. But there are people who also want to get rid of everything; and in this case, it is a paid service.”
“Second life” goes close for fifteen days, end of November 2024 before reopening in its new premises on rue de Cornouaille. It will be operational on December 17, 2024.
The recycling center will develop a “flea market” corner there, “with slightly more sought-after objects, which have more value and which we will put in a window.
We also go through the internet sales for items that cannot be sold at their fair value in stores.
