During their first interview with the new prefect of Cantal, Philippe , the representatives of the Peasant Confederationincluding Stéphan Elzière, Stéphane Malroux and Hervé Lacalmontie, expressed anger and the concerns of local farmers.

Firm opposition to Mercosur

The agricultural union vigorously denounces the agreement free trade with the Mercosurdescribed as “deadly logic for agriculture”. According to Stéphan Elzière, spokesperson for the Confédération Paysanne du Cantal, “ Mercosur, in this state or another, we don't want it “. The union criticizes the ambiguous position of the Government, recalling the destructive impact of these agreements on local farmsand food sovereignty.

Photovoltaics: preserving land and biodiversity

Another crucial subject: the installation of photovoltaic panels. The Confederation is opposed to their establishment on non-agricultural landconsidered vital for the biodiversity . “Before invading natural areas, let's use roofs, parking lots and surfaces already artificialized», pleads Stéphane Malroux, elected to the Chamber of Agricultureof Cantal.

Agri-voltaism which combines cultivation and energy production, is also disputed . Yield losses and precariousness of operatorsworry. “This creates a unfair competition for agricultural land and weakens farmers,” adds Stéphane Malroux.

Defending protective standards

Unlike certain unions advocating a relaxation of standards the Peasant Confederation sees it as a protection essential. “We don’t want no reduction in standards French authorities to align with those of the Mercosur countries. Our agriculture stands out for its quality, and we are committed to it,” insists Stéphan Elzière.
