This is called a “dynamic speed control device”. Since this Wednesday, November 27, 2024, a portion of the A 62 motorway, between the La Brède interchange and the Bordeaux ring road (Gironde), will be equipped with it. This represents a section of 10 km.
Objective stated by the prefecture: “optimize traffic flow capacity during the busiest hours” by adapting regulatory speeds to traffic conditions. A similar system had been put in place on another motorway in Gironde, the A63.
Traffic data on the A62 collected in real time
How will this work? “Traffic data is collected in real time by counting loops. When traffic becomes denser, the system induces a drop in speed before saturation to maintain fluid traffic for as long as possible,” presents the Gironde prefecture.
Thus the maximum authorized speed varies automatically“depending on actual traffic conditions”.
According to state services, it will be modulated from 130 km/h to 70 km/h in the south-north direction, in steps of 20 km/h.
To delay the appearance of traffic jams
This “dynamic regulation” system is used to delay and reduce the appearance of blockagesbut also to “better control travel times, particularly during rush hours, improve user safety by limiting the number of accidents/incidents, particularly due to lane changes and concertina traffic, and reducing the polluting effects of traffic on the environment,” indicates the prefecture.
14 light panels installed on the A62
Information panels are installed on all access ramps and at the end of the section to indicate to users that they are entering a regulated speed zone (located on all access ramps) or that they are leaving it (located at the end of the section).
Likewise, speed limit signs are installed in the middle of the road to indicate to the user that they are entering a section with regulated speed and prescribe the speed to be respected.
The maximum authorized speed is also reminded by illuminated signs on the shoulder of the A 62. In total, fourteen illuminated signs have now been installed.
