a necessary mobilization in Reunion

In 2023, on Island, the situation of violence against women is alarming. On average, 12 women come to a police station every day for acts of violence. The victim rate in our department is higher than that of , with 14.6% compared to a national average of 10.6%. Since the start of 2024, we have already deplored 2 feminicides on our island. The Saint-Denis and Saint-Pierre public prosecutor's office recorded more than 3,500 cases investigated last year concerning domestic violence. These figures are terrifying, but how many victims still remain silent, out of fear or shame?

This November 25, we organized awareness raising at the Cauldron against violence against seniors. This initiative made it possible to discuss with residents of the Les Sapotis senior residence, accompanied by seniors from the neighborhood, on this subject which unfortunately remains taboo in Reunion but which constitutes a real burden.

Other subjects were also discussed during this awareness-raising, such as violence against women, children and more generally intra-family violence. The observation made during this afternoon by our elders is that this struggle is intergenerational and affects all social classes. To reduce this scourge, it is crucial to break the silence, dare to talk about it and get our kids and gramounes talking as much as possible in order to avoid tragedies.

We must remember Chloé, 34 years old and mother, Kalma Beechok, 62 years old, Dinah, 14 years old from Reunion, to name but a few. We call for continued mobilizations to fight against all forms of violence.

Together we can make a difference and protect the most vulnerable.
