Donald Trump threatens to impose new tariffs on Canada

US President-elect Donald Trump is threatening to impose new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China upon taking office as part of his efforts to combat illegal immigration and drugs.

He wrote Monday evening, in messages published on his Truth Social website: “On January 20, as one of my many first executive orders, I will sign all the necessary documents to impose on Mexico and Canada a tariff of 25% off ALL products entering the United States.”

He said the new tariffs would remain in place “until drugs, especially fentanyl, and all illegal immigrants end this invasion of our country!”

Donald Trump also threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on China, “on top of any additional tariffs” on all products entering the United States, due to concerns over drugs, including fentanyl.

It’s unclear whether the Republican will actually follow through on his threats or if he’s using them as a negotiating tactic before taking office in the new year.
