On June 6th, the 6th edition of the Central Europe regional final of the international competition “My thesis in 180 seconds” took place at the ELTE University in Budapest.co-organized between the French Institutes of the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. A total of 10 candidates, doctoral students in these five countries, competed by presenting their research work in three minutes in French. Austrian candidate Elisabeth Heiszenberger, a doctoral student at the University of Vienna, won this sixth edition by receiving the first prize from the Jury.with the research topic “How spelling influences phonological representations: acquisition of liaison in French”. Elisabeth Heiszenberger will represent Central Europe at the international final to be held next November in Abidjan.

The second prize of the jury was awarded to Marta Ścisło from the University of Warsaw (Poland) and the third prize to Israa Kamal from the University of South Bohemia (Czech Republic). A public prize was also awarded to Hannah Horváth from the University of Technical Sciences and Economics in Budapest (Hungary).

Each year, a selection is organized by each French institute of the “Central Europe” consortium between February and March. The three winners of the Austrian national selection for the 2024 edition were Elisabeth Heiszenberger from the University of Vienna, Davide GNOATO from the University of Vienna with the thesis topic “The Adelphi phenomenon. The philosophy of the “single book” and the reception of the literature of “Mitteleuropa” in Italy. Investigation into the emergence of an imaginary world” and Lisa Marie Lang from the University of Innsbruck with the thesis topic “Compound words at the interface between form, meaning and usage: a contrastive analysis of German and Russian (Compounds at the interface between form, meaning and use : a contrastive analysis of German and Russian) ».

The aim of this competition is to to promote doctoral research across all disciplines, to encourage young researchers to popularize their research, to increase the importance of dialogue between science and society. The competition also seeks to promote the use of French. The competition was held for the first time in Central Europe in 2019 (the final was held in Warsaw). Due to the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 editions were organized online. In 2022, the French Institute in Austria and the University of Vienna hosted the return of the in-person final in 2022, then the French Institute in Prague and Charles University in Prague organized the 2023 edition. The next edition will be organized by the French Institute in Poland in Warsaw.
