The underwater tunnel project linking Morocco and Spain resurfaces. According to the Spanish daily “La Razón”, the “dream of building a tunnel connecting Africa to Europe via the Mediterranean is about to come true”, stressing that the project is estimated at six billion euros.
“This infrastructure will facilitate the movement of 12.8 million passengers per year and will be ready for the 2030 World Cup,” the newspaper emphasizes. And adds that following the tripartite candidacy for the World Cup, this underwater tunnel project between Morocco and Spain is considered the most ambitious in the world.
The tunnel will be approximately 38.7 kilometers long, including 27.8 kilometers under the sea and 11 kilometers underground. The depth of the tunnel will be 300 meters and the maximum slope will be 3%. The diameter of each single-lane tunnel will be 7.9 meters inside, while the diameter of the service gallery will be 6 meters. The three tunnels will be interconnected by transverse passages spaced 340 meters apart.
According to some Iberian newspapers, this infrastructure will have a major economic impact on the region. In particular, it will allow the creation of a hub for European and African transport networks and will facilitate the movement of people and goods between the two continents.
