On Saturday June 29, the intense storm that hung over the Alès basin damaged the historic monument dating from 1777.

The storm of this Saturday, June 29, remained a few hours above the Alès sky, causing spectacular damage in Saint-Christol-Lez-Alès. The Pyramid, a historical monument almost 250 years old, erected in the heart of the central roundabout of the town, was struck by lightning during the passage of the storm. Two discharges damaged the building, during the first downpour, around 5:30 p.m.

In the explosion, some of the stones that make up the Pyramid, at its first level, at the height of a man, were thrown out on either side of the square. According to witnesses, a vehicle using the roundabout at that time was damaged by one of the projectiles.

“I had never experienced that”

Faced with the disaster, the mayor, Jean-Charles Bénézet, is stunned: “The Pyramid has had other misadventures, but I had never experienced this.”. After cleaning the roads, the town hall is now launching analysis work with a view to repairs. For work, “we’ll have to find an expert”.

However, given the classification of the Pyramid as a historic monument, the mayor does not rule out State participation in the matter: “We’ll see when we get to the hard part, when we have to pay.”
