Aged 73, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah has been eligible for release for 25 years. Will the courts finally approve his conditional release? After a first favorable decision from the sentence enforcement court, on November 15, 2024, the Court of Appeal will in turn rule on December 19.

The decision of the sentencing court ordered the release of the Lebanese pro-Palestinian activist, Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, from December 6 on the condition that he leaves French territory and does not return there. His lawyer, Me Jean-Louis Chalanset, then greeted “a legal victory and a political victory“.

Sentenced to life imprisonment in 1986 for complicity in the assassination of two diplomats, an American and an Israeli, Georges Abdallah has been imprisoned for 40 years at the Lannemezan penitentiary center, in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

Until now, all the Lebanese activist's requests for conditional release had been rejected, except one in 2013, accepted on condition that he was subject to an expulsion order which had not, however, been signed by the minister. of the Interior at the time, Manuel Valls. And on November 15, 2024, the decision to release Georges Ibrahim Abdallah was suspended following an appeal from the anti-terrorism prosecution.

Georges Ibrahim Abdallah has been imprisoned for 40 years for complicity in murder at the Lannemezan penitentiary center in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Demonstrations are regularly organized to demand his release.

On the other hand, Washington, a civil party to the trial, systematically fought the demands for the release of the co-founder, in the early 1980s, of the Lebanese Revolutionary Armed Fractions (FARL), a small pro-Syrian and anti-Israeli Marxist group which claimed five attacks, including four fatalities, in France.

Will the Paris Court of Appeal free Georges Ibrahim Abdallah? The request for release will be considered on December 19 during a non-public hearing. The court's judgment will be rendered at a later date.
