The Toulouse Festival is giving carte blanche to trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf for a tribute to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry with the Orchestre National du Capitole, Thursday and Friday, at the Théâtre de la Cité.

Toulouse seems to adopt you. After the Zénith this winter, you are returning to Toulouse to play with the Orchester national du Capitole…

I already played from time to time with the Orchestre National du Capitole when I was a very young student when they needed additional trumpeters and I have very good memories of it. I am delighted to be able to collaborate with the orchestra again and especially to pay tribute to Saint-Exupéry. It is a beautiful message and it is important to celebrate people who have shaped us so much in their vision of the world and he is obviously one of them.

In fact, the Toulouse festival gives you carte blanche for the 80th anniversary of the death of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. What are you going to play?

They call it carte blanche but in reality, I just proposed a very simple program in which there is a work that I composed to celebrate Saint-Exupéry.

What does this work that you are proposing as a world creation tell us?

I was inspired by her human values. She is someone who traveled a lot and who did not leave us indifferent through her stories, her journey, her bravery, the way her life ended. The work had to be a reflection of all these values. So I wanted to compose a theme with a kind of grandeur. Something that is not forgotten, a bit like these great themes of The Little Prince. In fact, I composed music that could be a kind of soundtrack for a film about her life. That’s how I imagined it.

What does Saint-Exupéry represent for you?

The journey, human values, history, bravery, a certain idea of what human relationships can be, transmission, humanity. I also like the image it gives of the man who tries to surpass himself and reach his limits.
