Bayonne Festival 2024: More than 110 video surveillance cameras, the security system unveiled

A press conference was held this Tuesday, July 2, 2024 in the presence of the sub-prefect of Bayonne, Fabrice Rosay, the public prosecutor, Jérôme Bourrier, the commissioner as well as elected officials of the city of Bayonne in order to present the security arrangements planned for the Bayonne 2024 celebrations.

The 2024 edition of the Bayonne Festival will exceptionally be held from July 10 to 14 due to the Paris Olympics. Nearly 1.4 million party-goers gathered last year for this festive event. Despite the upcoming arrival of the Olympic Games, the human resources of this security system are almost identical to those of last year.

The security of festivals is a key issue for government services

This year, the security and rescue system to ensure the smooth running of the 5 days of festivities is almost identical to that of last year. Many issues are present around the security of the Bayonne Festival such as the fight against sexist violence and sexual, the fight against addictionsalcohol and drugs as well as the fight against noise and incivility.

More than 500 security personnel deployed during the holidays

In total, the security force includes: 120 departmental police officers, 300 CRS officers and 25 gendarmes. The municipal police officers of the city of Anglet will also be part of the system as well as private security services.

Important video surveillance device

In total, 115 cameras are available for the security forces as well as a drone during these 5 days of celebrations. The video surveillance system is described by the public prosecutor of Bayonne, Jérôme Bourrier as an “element of major importance”. It had made it possible to identify the attackers of the Bayonnais killed in the heart of the celebrations during the 2023 edition.

All of this equipment will be controlled from the security PC located in the Maison des Associations in Glain.

Checks during the holidays

Hygiene and fraud prevention will also be part of the vigilance points concerning the safety of the population. Agents from the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP) will be deployed to carry out checks on establishments and street traders. Numerous checks will be carried out in train stations and on the roads.

Emergency device

Nearly 400 rescuers will be present during these Bayonne festivities: 100 firefighters from the SDIS, 30 SAMU personnel, 150 volunteers from the Red Cross, and 100 volunteers from the Civil Protection will be deployed during these 5 days of festivities. As every year, teams on foot and on the water will be deployed at the heart of the festivities.
