For the Sables-d'Olonne firefighters, 2024 was of course the daily interventionsbut also and above all the security ofmajor events such as the passage of the Olympic flame on June 4, the contribution of reinforcement during the Olympic Games on the sites of , Châteauroux and , and recently, the security of the Vendée Globe.

A real first for Commander Lionel Faou, who arrived at the end of 2019, at the head of 48 professional sappers et 54 volunteer sappers.

Last Saturday, November 23, the day of Sainte-Barbewas the opportunity to to come back over these past twelve months and to reward certain firefighters.

Master Sergeant Jérôme Grare received the gold level firefighter medal of honor for his 30 years of service.
Chief Warrant Officer Stéphane Le Gallou, Chief Sergeant Benjamin Tenaud, Master Corporal Julien Petit and Corporal Denis Cottenceau received the silver level firefighter medal of honor for 20 years of service.
Commander Lionel Faou received the Vendée SDIS silver medal.
2nd class sappers Benjamin Pajot, Théo Retif and Alexandre Cohen received the distinction of 1st class sapper and the fourragère of the departmental corps.

Below the 4,000 intervention mark

The highlight of the year 2024 is the drop in the number of interventions below the bar. 4 000.

Between November 2023 and November 2024, it amounts to 3 994.

This drop of 15% interventions compared to the previous year was caused by “a refocusing of interventions », underlines the head of the Sables-d’Olonne center. For example, firefighters intervene less in emergency operations. lifting peoplethe service is carried out by other trades.

The commander also highlights the cooperation projects between the stakeholders security.

Particularly on the water rescue during the summer period.

“If we understand each other better, support will be better », he insists, pointing out the collaborative efforts with the SNSM rescuers.

2025 projects

Due to budgetary constraintsthe sappers also contributed to the renovation buildings.

This year, the head of the center estimates 30 000 € the savings achieved by this management.

“These are budgetary savings because it is done internally. It mobilizes the guys, it motivates them and they take better care of the buildings,” comments Lionel Faou, recalling that the interventions represent a tiny part of a firefighter's schedule.

The next works will be located at the level of war memorial and at administrative corridor.
