Jazz in Vienna: large participation, Festival-goers praised the marathon day

For its fourth edition, the Vienna Jazz Marathon Day, Sunday June 30, also election day, was as extensive as those of the three previous years: a good fifteen events took place throughout a very busy day. rich and very popular with Festival-goers. And by happy coincidence, as no concert was planned at the ancient theater in the evening, politics was able to regain its rights with the announcement of the results around 8 p.m., just before Airelle Besson’s concert at the Saint-Pierre church. André-le-bas, at the end of this day.…

According to a now-entrenched tradition, the Marathon Day started at 6:30 a.m. at the Belvédère de Pipet, just above the ancient theater, with a “Sunrise” concert.

A gentle awakening, the many participants lying in deckchairs being lulled by the notes of double bassist Fabien Sevilla.

He thus offered at dawn an immersion in a sound space where the double bass was used more, with other means, notably electronic, as a percussion instrument than as a harmonic instrument, leaving us somewhat hungry in this respect.

But immediately other free activities reached out to festival-goers, like the concert given on the Odéon site, opposite the ancient theatre by the Beninese brass band Harmony Brass Band, the one which also animates the Caravan’ Jazz which travels from town to town in Vienne Condrieu Agglomération from the festival rank.

What probably also makes this Jazz Marathon Day in Vienna so successful is that it also knows how to renew itself.

Thus, for the first time, an original approach was proposed to Cybèle, as part of the “Song for All” movement. More than a hundred participants were gathered at the foot of the Cybèle stage for a “Circle Song”.

The two facilitators, Gaël Aubrit and Alice Biaux, brought with great pedagogy and skill pure amateur singers, of all ages, not only to learn to express themselves without fear through voice, but also to improvise and for some, even leading collective improvisations for the first time. A real success directly linked to Jazz since improvisation is, as we know, at the very heart of blue music. This concept of “Singing for all” was originally imagined by a master in the field, Bobby McFerrin. Other developments in Vienna are also planned.

In any case, one certainty at the end of this day: like the very strong participation in the legislative elections, all the activities received a unanimous vote from festival-goers: a real plebiscite!
