Legislative elections 2024: Anaïs Sabatini re-elected in the first round in an armchair in the second constituency of the Pyrénées-Orientales

In the second constituency of the Pyrénées-Orientales nicknamed “the impregnable” as the National Rally has had a base there for several years, no surprises on the horizon: Anaïs Sabatini, representing the far-right party led by Jordan Bardella, has arrived at the top of the votes cast (54.98%) from the first round. Of the four outgoing deputies, she is the only one to be re-elected in the first round.

Master of her kingdom. Without detour and in the first round, the deputy Anaïs Sabatini for the National Rally was re-elected to her own succession with 54.98% of the votes cast (i.e. 38,324 votes). “Such a result in the first round, I didn’t expect itreacted the person concerned, evoking as much “the continuity”, what “confirmation of the work undertaken for years in this territory” composed of the cantons of Canet-en-Roussillon, Côte radieuse, Latour-de-France, Perpignan I, Rivesaltes, Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque, Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet and Sournia. “It was an honorable campaign, I acted as if nothing was won in advance and it paid off”adds the one who from this Monday will go “campaign for the other colleagues still in the running.”

Louis Aliot is delighted

In the 2022 legislative elections, where she was running for the first time, Anaïs Sabatini had collected 37.62% of the votes cast and found herself in a runoff against Frédérique Lis for the presidential majority with 20.49%. In the second round, one of Louis Aliot’s protégés made her opponent give in and was elected to sit in the Palais Bourbon with 61.23% of the votes cast (against 38.77%): “I can tell you that the mayor of Perpignan is delighted with the results in the department and in the second constituency for which he was a member of parliament between 2017 and 2020.”

“The Republic is sick and I am sad about it”

Marc Médina, without a label, finished second in the second district.

On the rest of the podium, Doctor Marc Médina, the only candidate without a label in the entire department, mayor of Torreilles and 14e vice-president of Perpignan Méditerranée Métropole managed to find a place on the second step (20.45% and 14,257 votes). A result without impact, but deserving given the course and the context: “I regret not having convinced with a path of appeasement, rationality and humanity. The Republic is sick and I am sad because it is the work of my life.”

David Berrué was under the New Popular Front label. During the 2022 legislative elections, he was with EELV.

The third step is occupied by David Berrué for the New Popular Front (19.96% and 13,910 votes): “It is a disaster for those in this area who care about social justice and who believe that the environment and climate change can be possible. I would like to remind you that the Agly valley is particularly suffering from drought and that some municipalities have needed to be restocked with water.”

In terms of results, the trend quickly emerged for the far-right elected official. At 8 p.m., Canet-en-Roussillon, one of the largest cities on the coast, succumbed to the sirens of Jordan Bardella’s party with 53.77% (4,448 votes). A quarter of an hour later in Latour-Bas-Elne, the largest municipality then counted, Anaïs Sabatini came out on top with 60.73% of the vote. At nightfall, the large municipalities of La Salanque consolidated her victory, Pia (62.60%), Saint-Laurent-de-la-Salanque (59.05%), Claira (59%), while Le Barcarès posted 63.14% of the vote for the RN candidate.

Sabatini’s record and Medina’s only capture, good neighbors

The unlabeled Marc Médina came first in only one municipality: Saint-Martin-de-Fenouillet (50 inhabitants in 2021). He collected 42.11% of the votes cast, or 16 votes. Strangely, the neighboring commune of Saint-Arnac (104 inhabitants in 2021) placed Anaïs Sabatini (RN) in pole position with 69.35% of the votes cast, i.e. 43 votes. His record in the entire constituency.

Marc Médina comments on this state of affairs: “If one day a political scientist can explain to me how people vote, I’m interested and I think we’ll have a good time. How can a village give itself to one political tendency and its neighbor, who experiences the same problems on a daily basis, to another? There are political mysteries to which my sixteen years of experience cannot answer.”
