Friday November 22, 2024, the mayor of La Réole, Bruno Marty, looked happy. There is reason: the rural commune of Gironde saw its urban elevator project – which connects the upper town and the lower town – be winner in the “Architecture and heritage promotion” category during the 2024 Elevator Trophies.
141,000 ascents/descents over the year
A long-term task since the project found funding in 2014 as part of the revitalization of the town center undertaken by the municipal team in place.
Inaugurated in September 2023, the urban elevator currently totals 141,000 ascents/descents over the current year. “A pretty staggering figure. We thought it was something new, but no,” commented the Réoles councilor during the trophy presentation ceremony.
According to Bruno Marty, this dynamic could reach up to 180,000 annual ascents/descents in the years to come.
The elevator impressed several mayors
The elected official also underlined the praise pronounced by several mayors of large cities about the urban elevator, notably Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris, Michaël Delafosse, mayor of Montpellier, and Pierre Hurmic, mayor of Bordeaux. Everyone came to La Réole for the political start of the Place Publique movement at the beginning of October 2024. “Even François Hollande was able to use it on Valentine's Day. They were impressed. »
“Great pride for a local SME like ours”
Present during the ceremony, Benjamin Cepa, technical director of the company Aquitaine Ascenseurs, expressed “his great pride for a local SME like ours to win this trophy”. He was also delighted to the ecological impact of the elevator : » Everyone can take the elevator, and it very rarely breaks down. “
A great success for all the companies that participated in this project:

“We were told that we were the French subsidies champions”
When concluding his speech in front of part of his municipal team and various project stakeholders, the mayor of La Réole returned to the financing of the overall project linking the lower town and the upper town. “We were told that we were the French subsidies champions» he joked playfully.
According to figures from the town hall, the DETR (Equipment Grant for Rural Territories) contributed 135,000 euros, the State 600,000 euros, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region 300,000 euros, the DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) at 76,000 euros, the European Funds at 137,000 euros, and the Department granted a grant of 300 000 euros. In total, this project will have cost 2,716,098 euros.
