Despite being beaten in Sens and Joigny, Julien Odoul (RN) was re-elected as deputy for the 3rd constituency of Yonne in the first round

Outgoing MP Julien Odoul (RN) was re-elected in the third constituency of Yonne in the first round of the early legislative elections, this Sunday, June 30, 2024. While nearly two out of three voters went to the polls (65.31%), he received 50.44% of the votes cast. Behind, Nicolas Soret (PS – New Popular Front) obtained 25.51%, ahead of Michèle Crouzet (MoDem – Presidential Majority) and her 17.51%.

It was a scenario feared by his opponents. It finally happened with 251 votes. Julien Odoul, outgoing deputy of the National Rally (RN), was re-elected in the third constituency of Yonne in the first round of the early legislative elections, this Sunday, June 30, 2024.

In a territory where 65.21% of voters went to the polls, Julien Odoul obtained 50.44% of the votes cast. He needed to obtain 28,484 votes to win an absolute majority, he obtained 28,735. The leader of the RN in Yonne and Bourgogne Franche-Comté is thus well ahead of Nicolas Soret (PS – New Popular Front) at 25.51%. Michèle Crouzet (MoDem – Presidential Majority) completes the podium with a score of 17.51%.

Nicolas Soret in the lead in Joigny and Sens

Julien Odoul was able to capitalize on the strong presence of the RN in the north of Yonne to retain his seat. Already in 2022, he was able to break the glass ceiling by riding on the local dynamics of the party, despite the failure of Marine Le Pen in the presidential election. The last European elections suggested a confirmation since Jordan Bardella’s list came first in all the municipalities in the constituency.

Highly anticipated by observers, the results in the two largest municipalities are nevertheless in favour of Nicolas Soret. The mayor of Joigny came out on top in his municipality, unsurprisingly, with 43.74% against 37.62% for Julien Odoul. The socialist also won by 97 votes in Sens, with 35.77% against 34.63% (21.26% for Michèle Crouzet).

It was therefore in the most rural areas that Julien Odoul went for the absolute majority this Sunday, June 30. In some municipalities, more than two out of three voters voted for the far-right candidate. These include Courgenay (67.86%), Cérilly (68%), Vaumort (68.46%) and Saint-Loup-d’Ordon (68.81%). He also came out on top in Saint-Julien-du-Sault (49.81%), Villeneuve-la-Guyard (51.62%), Villeneuve-sur-Yonne (52.1%), Pont-sur-Yonne (55.97%), Thorigny-sur-Oreuse (57.22%) and Villeneuve-l’Archevêque (58.52%).

To achieve an absolute majority, the elected official also knew how to unite Reconquête voters around him from the first round. Annik Vilbois, his former substitute, had to be content with 1% of the vote, while Éric Zemmour’s party had reached 5% on June 9 in the European elections.

Legislative elections: reactions in Yonne on the evening of the first round

“I feel a sense of gratitude towards the voters,” says the newly re-elected MP. “It’s an immense emotion, a mark of confidence that touches me enormously. I never imagined I would be elected in the first round. To those who told me so, I replied that a battle is never won in advance, it was a difficult election, the forces were tough. I had a leaflet and a campaign calendar ready for the second round.”

The results. Julien Odoul (RN), 50.44%; Nicolas Soret (PS/NFP), 25.51%; Michèle Crouzet (MoDem/Ensemble), 17.51%; Grégoire Weigel (DVD), 3.99%; Annik Vilbois (Reconquëte), 1%; Simonne Pallant (LO), 0.95%; Jean-Charles Kermin (Workers’ Party), 0.61%.
