The Transat Québec Saint-Malo is making its big return to the ocean racing calendar. After a 2020 edition canceled due to Covid, the famous transatlantic race created in 1984 by André Langlois, takes off this Sunday, June 30, from the port of Quebec on the Saint-Laurent River to Saint-Malo, the Breton corsair city. A race on the North Atlantic, which takes the opposite path to that of Jacques Cartier, the Malouin navigator explorer who “discovered” Canada in 1534.
DIRECT. Real-time leaderboard and positions
The course
The fleet of 28 boats, including 24 Class40s, must first descend the St. Lawrence River to its mouth in Gaspésie. A very delicate 400-mile journey due to the strong current and heavy maritime traffic. The boats have a route mark to cross in front of the town of Rivière-au-Renard. By avoiding a whale protection zone, south of Gaspésie, the fleet of Class40s and the four large mono boats will head towards Europe. Via a passage in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon and the Fastnet rock for large monos. Directly on Saint-Malo for the Class40s.
The competitors
24 Class40 crews are participating in the race. Crews of three or four team members, most of them very experienced and made up of high-level sailors.
We find the tenors of the Class, such as the Italian Ambrogio Beccaria, winner of The Transat CIC, Ian Lipinski his runner-up, Amélie Grassi, Erwan Le Draoulec, Achille Nebout, Guillaume Pirouelle, Fabien Delahaye and Vincen Riou. And among the luxury teammates: Thierry Chabagny, Corentin Douguet, Alexis Loison, Benjamin Schwartz…
Palmares
During the last edition in 2016, it was the Spaniard Gonzalo Botin who won in 11d 22h ahead of Isabelle Joschke and Catherine Pourre… In Multi 50 Lalou Roucayrol crossed the line as winner ahead of Thierry Bouchard.
The list of winners also includes Laurent Bourgnon (1992), Loick Peyron (1996), Franck Cammas (2000), Karine Fauconnier (2004).
