Legislative elections: in Paris, outgoing MP Danielle Simonnet, ousted by LFI, announces that she has come out on top

It was one of the duels to follow for the left in Paris. Danielle Simonnet, outgoing and dissident deputy of the 15th constituency of Paris, in the 20th arrondissement, came out on top in the first round of the early legislative elections.

“I am well ahead in my constituency with 42% of the votes in the counting at this time and therefore assured of being in the 2nd round and winning. But the most important thing this evening is to convince everyone in France of the urgent need to beat the RN. Let’s not let them take power! “, declared the candidate of the dissident Popular Front of LFI.

Facing her, officially invested by LFI and under the label New Popular Front, Céline Verzeletti, CGT trade unionist, did not communicate.

In the 20th arrondissement of Paris, where the outgoing MP Danielle Simonnet was running without the official NFP nomination, awarded by LFI to the trade unionist Céline Verzeletti, the resemblance of the two ballot papers disturbed some left-wing voters. “It’s confusing, especially when you’re not too interested in the ‘popol’,” Walter said as he left the 20th arrondissement town hall. “I wondered how not to harm the union,” says Yacine, who ultimately chose Danielle Simonnet, the candidate with “the most parliamentary experience.”

A constituency accustomed to dissent

In this constituency, which extends from Belleville to Père-Lachaise and Boulevard de Charonne, via Rue des Pyrénées, fratricidal battles are a habit. In 2022, she had already been the subject of a clash between two left-wing candidates: the outgoing PS MP Lamia El Aaraje and Danielle Simonnet, invested under the Nupes banner. The latter, a former municipal councilor then councilor of Paris, had won her seat as deputy in the second round with 58.45% of the votes cast, against 41.44% for the dissident candidate.

For this election, Danielle Simonnet was ousted by the management of LFI during the allocation of constituencies. The outgoing MP had denounced a “purge” and maintained her candidacy despite everything in this district largely won over to the left.

In the last European elections, the list led by Manon Aubry came out on top with 28.17% of the vote and in the 2022 presidential election, Jean-Luc Mélenchon won 47.17% of the votes in the first round.
