Apple is preparing the launch of the Vision Pro in France, with the activation of the manufacturer’s various services and the App Store dedicated to the mixed reality headset in France. A store in which applications will also be able to offer alternative payment methods, as required by the DMA.

July 12 is the big day for French customers of Vision Pro : they will be able to leave an Apple Store with the big box of the mixed reality headset under their arm! But since last Friday, it is possible to pre-order your unit. Without waiting, Apple has activated the French version of the App Store as well as the manufacturer’s various online services, including Apple Music and Apple TV, which thus offers “immersive experiences” in 3D and at 180 degrees to take in the view.

The app store logically highlights apps optimized for the headset, starting with Disney+ which offers specific environments. Too bad the selection of 3D films (and sometimes in HFR) available in the United States is not there. On the other hand, Apple Arcade does contain all the games in virtual and mixed reality, to be played with your fingers (good luck).

The app store contains more than 2,000 native apps for visionOS, according to Apple’s count, which adds 1.5 million iPhone and iPad apps that are compatible with the headset. Although the interface is not adapted to the eye and finger controls of the operating system, which can be frustrating. As is the absence of several big names like YouTube, Netflix and Spotify who have not authorized the functioning of their iOS/iPadOS apps in the headset. You will have to make do with the web version.

In France as in Germany, where the Vision Pro will be released on the same day, the visionOS App Store will be subject to the rules of the DMA, the European text on digital markets. This means that applications have the possibility of selling content using alternative payment methods to that of Apple. To do this, however, it will be necessary to use visionOS 1.2, which will probably be the version of the headset sold on July 12.

These alternative payment methods are also available in Apple’s iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS and tvOS stores in Europe. This rule does not exempt developers from paying a commission to the manufacturer, which is one of Brussels’ grievances.
