After the town of Vernier, it is that of Lancy which takes the plunge and prohibits commercial advertising on its territory. According to the first anticipated results covering 95% of the ballots, the Lanceans voted by a narrow majority (51.1%) in favor of the decision of the municipal council which was attacked by referendum. The municipality of Lancy has around 104 panels on its territory, or 157 display areas. To these are added 44 panels installed in the private domain which should also be removed, because the project provides that no commercial advertising is visible from the public domain. A similar project was refused in the city of Geneva in March 2023. Here again, it was a narrow majority (51.9%) which tipped the scales, while the Administrative Council was in favor of a ban.

This decision resonates as a victory for the municipality of Lancy and for the left, which supported this ban. In its press release, the socialist party of Lancy points to a result which demonstrates, according to it, that the population aspires “to a public space freed from advertising pressures, valued for social, cultural and environmental uses”, adding that this vote “marks a essential step towards an urban model respectful of the common good, where private interests no longer dictate collective rules.” This decision also has the consequence of depriving the municipality of 250,000 francs in annual fees for 2025 to 2030, paid by the display company, according to information confirmed by the municipality.
