Thunderstorms in Deux-Sèvres: the impressive video of a century-old sequoia struck by lightning: News

On Saturday, June 29, in Deux-Sèvres, violent storms caused multiple damages. A century-old sequoia was even destroyed by lightning in Augé, in the courtyard of a restaurant. No casualties were reported.

The storms which hit part of France on Saturday June 29 were violent. This is the case in Deux-Sèvres, as France 3 explains this Saturday. Thirty-five firefighters were mobilized at the height of the bad weather and storms in the morning. The storms caused three fires and the spectacular explosion of a sequoia located in the courtyard of a restaurant in the town of Augé. Lightning struck the 35-meter-high tree around 9 a.m., as can be seen in the video relayed by BFMTV. The images are impressive and, fortunately, no casualties have been reported, as the establishment is closed on weekends.

The debris from the tree smashed the restaurant owner’s van and the roof of the outbuilding of the Ardoise hotel-restaurant. The three employees of the establishment are technically unemployed for an indefinite period, because the building was heavily damaged. The damaged van is the personal vehicle of the restaurateur, who confided that he “may not be able to go on vacation” this summer since his vehicle is out of service. To France Bleu this Saturday, the restaurateur indicated that it was the neighbors who warned him of the explosion of the tree. “We have two ripped roofs, and my vehicle was in the yard, so I’ll let you imagine,” he confided. His car, “a Volkswagen transporter”now looks like “to a mini Austin”.

A surge of solidarity to help him

After the bad weather, a wave of solidarity was organized to come to the rescue of the restaurateur. Friends arrived to clear the interior courtyard of the restaurateur, strewn with debris from the redwood of which nothing remains. A basket was also brought in to begin repair work. “The priority is to clear the ground to get the vehicle out of the yard, in order to access the gas cylinder behind it, which is under a tangle of branches.”, explained the restaurateur. And to add: “Until we secure the gas, we cannot reopen.”
