The defending champion is already out the door! Winner of the Euro in 2021, Italy, already miraculously in the group stage, hoped to wake up for the round of 16 in a duel against Switzerland. But reality caught up too quickly with Luciano Spalletti’s men who are out the door against a Swiss team that is largely superior in all areas. At the start of the match, Gigio Donnarumma quickly pushed for exploits, but the Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper could not keep up the illusion for long.

Switzerland is far too strong

Before the break, Remo Freuler opened the scoring with a superb sequence of control from the right – strike from the left (37th, 1-0) to start the match. Upon returning from the locker room, the Helvetians immediately made the difference with a sublime strike from Ruben Vargas (46th, 2-0). The gap was made, and the National never really managed to react, as evidenced by the Italians’ first shot on target in the… 70th minute. Switzerland won 2-0 and reached the quarter-finals, Italy, reigning champion, will abandon their crown.

To sum up

Switzerland made short work of Italy to reach the quarter-finals with an easy victory over the defending champions. The Swiss won easily with a score of 2-0 thanks to goals from Freuler and Vargas.
