Belgian Athletics Championships: Kevin Borlée scores points for the Olympics

Kevin Borlée clocked a time of 46.39 in the 400m in the heats of the Belgian athletics championships on Saturday at the King Baudouin stadium in Brussels.

For his first race of the season, Kevin Borlée, 36, scored points to secure his Olympic selection with the Belgian Tornados. He could compete in Paris this summer for his 5th Games in a row. It seems more compromised for his twin brother, Jonathan, who did not start on Saturday due to a back problem. The fastest time in the series on the track was achieved by Robin Vanderbemden in 46.18. Florent Mabille ran in 46.23. Kevin Borlée posted the 3rd time in 46.39, the 7th Belgian time of the year. Eight athletes (maximum) will go to Paris for the 4X400m relay.

Jonathan Borlée did not manage a time this year and his case will be deliberated by Jacques Borlée, coach of the Belgian Tornados, and the competent authorities. Dylan Borlée ran in 46.56, 4th time of the series on Saturday. “That gives hope,” confided Kevin Borlée.I’m probably not going to play the final so as not to take any risks. My Achilles tendons still hurt. I told Olivia (her sister, editor’s note) before the race that it could be the last. I was counting on a time of 48 seconds. I’m 46.39. There are still five to six weeks before the event in Paris. I can definitely win another second.

Kevin Borlée also hopes to see his brother Jonathan board the train, despite his absence on Saturday. “In training, he is at least at my level. I think he has his place for Paris. We are the first to recognize when we do not have the level to bring something to the team. We will certainly not go as tourists to Paris“.
