Beaune – The return of Nicolas Rolin in prayer at the Hôtel-Dieu

This Friday, the panel of Nicolas Rolin in prayer by Roger Van Der Weyden (1443) returned to its original location at the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune, which had lent it to the Louvre at the end of February for the exhibition “Revoir Van Eyck: La Vierge du chancelier Rolin”. This work, along with the 14 other panels, makes up the polyptych of the Last Judgement, commissioned by Nicolas Rolin for the foundation of the Hôtel-Dieu in the mid-15th century to provide physical and spiritual care to the sick.
The panel had almost never left its original location, with the exception of a restoration in the 19th century and an exhibition in the early 20th century.
The analyses carried out this Friday by Françoise Auger-Feige, independent painting conservator and restorer, confirm that the condition of the panel is consistent with the findings made before its departure and hanging at the Louvre.
Visitors can now admire this panel again at the Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices Civils de Beaune.
