Syded and Sictom are joining forces to promote composting, reduce household waste and encourage responsible sorting among the inhabitants of Quercy blanc and the Lalbenque-Limogne region.

We must salute the initiative which was carried out on Monday November 18, in Montcuq, by the Syded du Lot and the Sictom les Marches du sud Quercy, a union which brings together the communes of the territory of the communities of communes of Quercy Blanc and Pays de Lalbenque -Limogne. Sictom organizes the collection of waste, Syded processes it, recycles it and manages the recycling centers.

As part of the anti-waste law for a circular economy, the two organizations carried out an action: providing a free composter kit to each household in the region that requested it. The aim is to reduce the quantity of household waste and deposits in recycling centers, and to encourage residents to show good citizenship by sorting it correctly.

A total of 480 composters were distributed over several dates in the villages of the sector concerned. On a cost of €60 per composter, Syded pays €40 and Sictom €20.

Before collecting their composter, residents were given an individual composting guide and received a little training from Syded facilitators in order to use it correctly. How and where to install it? What to put there and above all not to put there? How to maintain it, humidify it and oxygenate it? What is the decomposition process? Where to put the clippings and leaves from the garden, the packaging? What do we then do with the resulting compost?
“Composting means reducing household waste by 30%, while reducing the environmental impact,” explained the host.

Pedagogical effort

For Jean-Louis Bergougnoux, president of Sictom, who attended the distribution, the educational effort must be continued. “We must restrict the contents of the black trash as much as possible. We still see incivility, he deplores, which penalizes good students. We find household waste in recyclables, clothing, bulky items, and recently even glass cans that are still full. Last month, the percentage of recyclables refused at the Catus processing center, managed by Syded, reached 35% which must be returned to Montech to be sorted again. Not to mention the costs this generates. »

At the fiscal level, the rate of the household waste removal tax (TEOM) increases regularly. It increased from 14.60% in 2023 to 15.60% in 2024 for Sictom les Marches du sud Quercy.
