The “tropical nights” started a little later this year, but they are likely to make it difficult to sleep this summer.

We all know those stifling nights, during which it is so difficult to fall asleep. Having become more and more common on the Côte d’Azur during the summer season, “tropical nights” are back at the end of June.

The beginning of summer 2024 is far from being the warmest recorded in the South region. But in the coming days, the thermometer will not often drop below 27 degrees during the day. A temperature that then does not drop sufficiently at sunset and causes this meteorological phenomenon.

Until July 6, a series of “tropical nights”

As a reminder, “tropical nights” represent all the evenings during which the mercury does not drop below 20 degrees. In 2024, they occur a little later, but they are very present and will make your entry into the kingdom of Morpheus more difficult.

This will be the case in particular in the coming days. According to Météo France, none of the nights until July 6 will escape it in Nice, with temperatures between 21 and 23 degrees. The highest temperatures recorded are expected this weekend, between June 28 and 30.

It should be noted that the Côte d’Azur region is particularly affected because of the Mediterranean. In fact, above 25 degrees, the sea has difficulty cooling down, which causes these heat waves in the evening.

Year after year, the number of recorded “tropical nights” increases. According to experts, it could reach a total of 73 in the Maralpine capital from 2041. For example, 68 were counted in 2022.

We must therefore get used to living with these very high temperatures, and therefore do our best to preserve our sleep. In this article, we gave you some advice to limit the consequences when falling asleep. There is of course the famous air conditioning, or the fan. Ideally, you can point the latter towards the outside of an open window to try to expel the hot air. Placing it towards you, covered with a damp cloth, would also have its effect. And if the wind is a little cooler, leaving your window ajar can be a solution.

Close your shutters during the day, drink a lot…

Taking a cold shower just before bed can also help, but you need to combine this with keeping your bedroom at a more appropriate temperature. For this, it is recommended to keep your shutters closed in the afternoon. You also have the option of lightly dampening the sheets, or even the pillow, with a mister.

Finally, you should unplug your devices that are potentially sources of heat. For food and hydration, eating light and drinking plenty of water seems essential. And if you are sensitive to it, meditation can be virtuous, in order to calm your mind.
