call for a march in Cayenne this November 25

Monday, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, l'Arbre Fromager is calling for a march in . A time for discussion is planned after the stroll through the city center in the presence of other associations. The meeting is at 5 p.m., Place des Palmistes.

In 2021, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, Arbre Fromager organized a “Die In” at Place des Palmistes. While on the microphone members of the association cited the names of women killed by the partner, or their ex-partner and the circumstances of the death, participants fell to the ground. That year, there were 103 To date, according to the collective “Feminicides by companions or ex” which takes a very sad account, as of November 13, there would be 88. If we must use the conditional here, it is because according to the surveys and declarations, there may be a readjustment to be made. The Ministry of the Interior, which publishes this data once a year, delivered its figures at the beginning of the month. Beyond femicides, that is to say the murder of one or more women or girls because they are female, it paints a bleak general picture of violence against women, particularly in a marital context.

The situation is even more alarming if we consider data from Guyana. Thus, in our territory, the number of women victims of domestic violence was 13.1 women per 1,000 inhabitants aged 15 to 64. What makes Guyana the 6th French department with the highest rate.

It is in this context that Monday's demonstration is being organized. “The spirit of the march is to come together, to give each other strength and to say that together, we can do something”says Audrey Buguellou, coordinator of “Violence against women” actions within the L’Arbre Fromager association.

Walking to show your mobilization is a time-tested practice for us. To those who might argue that the action seems in vain, Audrey Buguellou's response is quick: “ we don't do it to change anything in particular. Our goal is to make this reality visible in Guyana, to tell all the victims, especially those who are silent, that we are thinking of them, that we are there. That many people are there for them. »

Another objective of the demonstration: to pay tribute to the two identified victims of femicide. On April 17 in Macouria, a man stabbed his ex-partner and her children . Three days later, another place, another drama. A 16-year-old girl lost her life in Cayenne, stabbed by her stepfather who also seriously injured her mother « We want to walk to say that we are thinking of them » indicates Audrey Buguellou.

On Monday, alongside the Arbre Fromager which, since 2003, has supported female victims by offering emergency accommodation, several structures will be present: Victime 973, the Guyanese Victim Support Association, the Prevention House and for the protection of families, Kaz Avenir LGBT, Sis Guyane, EndoAmazones…

From 5 p.m., the public is invited to go to Place des Palmistes. On site, all materials to make banners and signs will be provided. The start of the march is set for 5:30 p.m. A time for discussion is planned after the walk.
