She is the authorities’ bête noire, the one who brings out what is wrong. “Not because I like it, but to improve the system,” she smiles. Wearing a black and white floral blouse, Immacolata Iglio Rezzonico welcomes us into her studio in Lugano. Petite and discreet, this 57-year-old lawyer has become, in spite of herself, a star in the asylum world. Because in the Swiss legal landscape, she is a rare bird: she graciously defends rejected applicants who want to appeal.

The youngest of two daughters, Immacolata Iglio Rezzonico grew up in Luino, in northern Italy, near the Swiss border, where her parents emigrated in the 1960s, when it was still difficult for Latinos to rent an apartment. “I know what injustice means. I experienced discrimination against my parents.”
