Edit of 11/20/2024: Ultimately, 49 French departments are classified as orange vigilant for snow, ice, wind, wave-submersion or avalanches. The article has been updated.
We have given you the map of all the departments concerned a little further down. And the list goes on. This Wednesday, Météo-France placed 49 French departments on orange alert for snow and ice. From Côtes-d'Armor to Haut-Rhin via Normandy and the Paris region, a large swath crossing France from West to East is affected by this alert. This morning, “only” 28 departments were classified in orange. The storm is gaining strength, even if there are many uncertainties regarding the intensity of the phenomenon.
From 6 a.m. tomorrow morning, storm Caetano could bring more or less heavy snowfall. We therefore expect between 15 and 20 centimeters locally in the Grand-Est. Accumulations locally exceeding 70 centimeters could also occur on the heights of the Alps.
But the French mountains will not be the only ones affected. According to Météo-France, snowfall is also expected in the plains, with between two and five centimeters in the West and in the Paris Basin. Thicknesses of up to ten centimeters are reported locally. According to forecasters, “the exact trajectory of the depression will determine the areas affected by snow and strong wind gusts.”

If some people are not concerned by the snow, they can console themselves with the cold wind. Wind gusts could be around 100 km/h inland between Loire-Atlantique and Cher and reach 110-120 km/h along the coasts of Loire-Atlantique and Vendée. Wave-submersion alerts are also issued for all coastal departments.
