Pension reform: “Not serious”, “irresponsible”, after having voted in favor of its repeal in committee, will the left manage to pass the test of Parliament?

It is a text which, last year, pushed many French people to take to the streets. This Wednesday, November 20, left-wing deputies, with the help of the National Rally, voted in favor of repealing the pension reform in the Social Affairs Committee with 35 votes in favor. Facing them, elected officials from the center and the right who voted against with 16 votes.

If this decision is good news for La France insoumise (LFI) which presented this text as part of its parliamentary niche, it must now go before Parliament.

Indeed, LFI now wants the text to be included in the Communists' parliamentary niche, in the Senate, on January 23, 2025, specifies Le Figaro. For this, it will first have to be adopted in the National Assembly on November 28.

However, if it were to be rejected by the upper house, the text would then have to return to the deputies to be re-examined at second reading during the Ecologists' niche in February 2025.

Does the text have a chance of succeeding?

If the LFI and RN elected officials seem to have managed to reach an agreement in committee, it remains to be seen whether they will be able to do so in the Assembly.

And for good reason, the National Rally, which had presented a similar proposal at the end of October, but which the left had not supported, voted for the text of La France insoumise. “It’s the same as ours, and we are not sectarian,” lamented the deputy for Loiret, Thomas Ménage (RN).

The left will also not be able to count on the government coalition which warned against a text “not serious” or “irresponsible”.
