La France insoumise (LFI) has just announced its official membership in the international campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel.
In its press release, the far-left party justifies this position by the need to respond to what it describes as “genocide” in Gaza and denounces “colonization and apartheid imposed by the State of Israel” . LFI maintains that, since 1948, Israel “violates international law with impunity” and ignores resolutions condemning its policies.
The BDS movement, launched in 2005 by more than 170 Palestinian civil society organizations, advocates economic and political boycott actions against institutions and companies deemed “complicit” in Israeli policy. It aims in particular to denounce the “colonization of the occupied territories and to defend the right of return of Palestinian refugees”. This membership marks a significant turning point for LFI, which thus becomes the first major French political party to officially support the BDS movement. The party presents this decision as “a concrete act of solidarity” reflecting its vision of an “independent France in the service of peace”. This position risks provoking strong reactions in the French political landscape, where the BDS movement has been the subject of legal and political controversies for several years.
