Senegal’s exports saw a clear increase in September 2024, particularly for gold and petroleum products. However, some products saw a significant decline compared to the previous month. This is the case for phosphoric acid (16.9 billion in September compared to 31.5 billion in August), zirconium (5.8 billion compared to 72 billion), as well as food preparations for soups and broths (7. 3 billion compared to 8 billion in August). Compared to September 2023, Senegal’s total exports jumped by 97.6%, reaching a total of 2,674.9 billion FCFA at the end of September 2024.
According to the National Agency for Statistics and Demography (ANSD), Senegalese exports reached a remarkable 422.7 billion CFA francs in September, marking an increase of 85.2% compared to the previous month (228 .2 billion in August compared to 250.1 billion in September). This increase is mainly due to the sharp increase in sales of non-monetary gold (95.7 billion, compared to 149 billion in August), petroleum products (68.5 billion, compared to 53.8 billion in August), and titanium. (11.5 billion, compared to 95 billion in August). However, these increases were moderated by declines in exports of other products.

Fluctuations in certain sectors, particularly in non-durable products, highlight the need for Senegal to further diversify its exports and ensure greater stability in key sectors. Jewelry and beauty care saw growth of 1.4%, while the “restaurants and hotels” sectors also saw a slight increase of 0.3%.
In its quarterly report, the ANSD notes a general increase in consumer prices (HPC) of 1.0% compared to the previous quarter. Food products and non-alcoholic beverages recorded an increase of 1.8%, due to the increase in prices of fresh leafy vegetables (+25.4%), root vegetables (+18.3%) and fresh fish (+15.3%). However, this increase was partially offset by a drop in the prices of bread (-7.2%), citrus fruits (-5.9%) and unprocessed cereals (-3.9%).

Compared to the third quarter of 2023, consumer prices decreased by 1.1%, due to the drop in prices of “food and non-alcoholic beverages” (-2.7%) and related goods and services housing, water, gas, electricity and other fuels (-0.6%). Prices of fresh leafy vegetables particularly fell by 29.7%. Among the few sectors in decline, “communication goods and services” fell by 3.4%, due to the reduction in telephone service prices (-4.3%).
Durable goods grew 0.1%, while non-durable goods rose 1.4%. Services saw a slight decline of 0.1%. As for imported products, their price decreased by 0.6%, while local products saw their prices increase. Health-related spending increased by 0.8%, largely due to rising prices for traditional medicines (+4.3%), and spending on “alcoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics” increased. of 0.5%.
