Lhe Capeyron college staff is overwhelmed. Since the start of the school year, two school incidents, two intrusions and two attacks on teachers have been reported, and six students have been excluded from school for violence. Teachers, educational assistants (AED), parents and elected members of the board of directors denounce the lack of human resources to monitor entry and take care of the 550 students of the college. They gathered Thursday June 20 in front of the establishment.

What happened ?

In November 2023, the older brother of a student educated at the establishment entered the school and showed up to the entrance of a classroom to verbally attack a mathematics teacher, in front of his students, who were all shocked by the scene.

A month later, on December 21, a 4 year old studente expelled from college entered the building before insulting a teacher. She followed him and caught up with him to get him out of the establishment but he grabbed her by the neck. Shocked by this physical altercation, the professor filed a complaint. “Since then, he has been hanging around in front of the school, I pass him every day. I have a knot in my stomach,” she says. The student in question happens to be passing a few meters away, in front of the school, just as she is recounting her anguish.

Teachers, parents, AEDs and elected members of the board of directors are demanding more human resources.

N.L.

Two weeks ago, a student lost consciousness during a bad choking game, before falling on his head to the floor. Results: a broken tooth and a severed piece of tongue. “This is one incident too many. This happened when we only had one AED to monitor 400 students in the playground, in addition to the toilets and the gate, even though that is not his job. This incident is symptomatic of the lack of human resources. It could have been avoided,” complains Damien Gilhodes, member of the board of directors.

Lack of staff

The staff say they regularly call the police because there are also “gangs of youths who often come to the entrance to settle their scores with middle school students.” “We don’t feel safe. I’ve been working here for eighteen years, this is the first time I’ve been afraid of certain students,” says a teacher.

The elected representatives of the CA do not accuse the two successive heads of establishments this year, “who did what they could to obtain more resources”, but denounce the inaction of the Academic Directorate of National Education Services (Dasen). They are demanding at least one additional AED station and a dressing room station to avoid intrusions, which have not been replaced for two years. “If it is not an AED, it is a maintenance agent who must monitor the entrance, this is not normal,” regret the elected officials.

Despite several contacts and a meeting with Dasen, based on a self-assessment report which highlights the lack of reception staff and AED in this college, elected officials have so far not obtained additional resources. in the face of repeated violence and intrusions. Contacted, the Department is “aware of the situation” and declares that it is only responsible for the maintenance of the building. The municipality, for its part, ensures that mediators come regularly to this college.
