Since the weekend and the beginning of the week, the agricultural movement has been organizing throughout France to make its anger heard and in particular its opposition to the free trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Mercosur, economic alliance bringing together several South American countries.
In Meurthe-et-Moselle, after covering municipal signs in recent days, a hundred farmers gathered Tuesday November 19 has Nancy.
A demonstration by farmers in front of the prefecture
The rally was scheduled for this Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in front of the prefecture of Meurthe-et-Mosellea stone's throw from Place Stanislas. Trailers full of town signs which they had dismantled, the farmers began to place them in front of the building gates.
A few moments later, two tractors filled with straw bales and lifting equipment arrived, escorted by the police, via Sainte-Catherine Street.
In pouring rain, farmers laid signs and union flags (FDSEA and Young Farmers) in front of the windows of the prefecture of Meurthe-et-Moselle.
“Birds hide to die, not farmers”
After moving the scooters parked in front of the prefecture, the farmers deployed a large black tarpaulin on part of the facade of the building. On it, they tagged the message: “Birds hide to die, not farmers. »
Then, the lifting equipment went into action to move the bales of straw. They installed two straw men in front of the prefecture. The rest of the straw was spread along the street, from Porte Sainte-Catherine to the golden gates of Place Stanislas.
Other actions to come next week
Shortly after 3 p.m., a delegation of farmers was received, as planned, by the prefect of Meurthe-et-MoselleFrançoise Souliman.
Questioned at the start of the demonstration, Jérémy Jenneson, president of the Departmental Federation of Farmers' Unions (FDSEA 54), explained that this demonstration was in line with the actions carried out for three days in the department.
The basic work is to explain that we are suffering at the moment. We had a very bad harvest, we have diseases and all the subjects that are added to us are forcing us out. [dans la rue]. That's the message. A month ago, we said: “We are not paid from the CAP (common agricultural policy), we have the nitrate directive which impacts us. This is not normal in a context which is complicated.” And there, we come to say: “In a complicated context, having Mercosur is not possible.”
This demonstration should not be the last of the year to listen to the president of the FDSEA 54: “ I think next week we'll see each other again. We will try to be inventive in our mode of action. »
