The Senegal Lions concluded the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) qualifiers on a positive note by winning against Burundi at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade. A 2-0 victory which confirms their domination in Group L and places them among the favorites for the continental tournament.

Habib Diarra, man of the match

The hero of the evening is undoubtedly Habib Diarra. The Senegalese midfielder scored a decisive double, opening the scoring in the 33rd minute before sealing the victory at the start of the second half, in the 50th minute. These two actions, both timely and inspired, illustrate the talent and precision of the player, who shone during this gathering.

Despite overall domination, the Lions once again showed limits in offensive animation. However, the team managed the meeting seriously, thus confirming its status as the undisputed leader of the group.

A faultless run in group L

With this victory, Senegal completes the qualifiers at the top of Group L with 16 points, far ahead of its pursuers, including Burkina Faso, who suffered a heavy defeat against Malawi (3-0) the day before. This success is all the more symbolic as it comes at the end of a contrasting year for the Lions, marked by lackluster performances.

This last match had little at stake on an accounting level, but it was decisive in restoring the team’s confidence and offering a good performance to Pape Thiaw, interim coach.
