The Mexican family from Trois-Rivières who was threatened with deportation will be able to stay in the country. The expulsion measures that were to be taken against its members on Wednesday have been canceled: they will therefore be able to stay in the country.

Noé Olan Alcocer, Maria Silvan and their two children will not have to return to Mexico. The family learned the news Tuesday evening.

They particularly feared being targeted by criminal groups who allegedly threatened them with death when they lived in Mexico. Family friend Angela Liset Barrios celebrated the victory with them.

It’s a miracle for usshe said in an interview on the show Always in the morning.

They say they were very surprised by the call from an immigration officer, thinking all hope was lost.

[J’ai eu] an explosion of [joie]a lot of emotions, a shocktestifies Noé.

Until now, they had been denied refugee status for lack of evidence that the family’s lives were threatened if they returned to Mexico.

Yet this is the reason that pushed them to leave their country and choose Canada.

Mexico is always dangerous, because you don’t know when you’re going [rencontrer] a person who is armed, a person who will threaten youexplains the father.

Instead of being deported, the couple will be able to file an application to obtain permanent residency on humanitarian grounds, a victory that Ms. Barrios associates with the community’s involvement in the couple’s cause.

It’s really a team effort, whether it’s the Latino community, the community that meets at the sanctuary, the Quebecers, the families who are around Noé […]. It’s really the support of an entire community here in Trois-Rivières.she says.

Trois-Rivières becomes their home for good. The couple is happy to be able to take up residence there without fear of having to leave. I am in love with all the things that are here, in Trois-Rivières, with the Latin community, with the Quebec community, with all the people I knowassures Noé.

Noé and Maria have one year to apply to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. They will have to hire a lawyer to help them with this process.

In the meantime, both parents will be able to continue working at Olymel in Yamachiche. Remember that Maria is pregnant with the family’s third child.
