the essential
The latest creation from the Lectourian company Yves Marc- Théâtre du Mouvement, is presented at the Off d’Avignon 2024 festival.

Audience: Instructions for Use, or The Art of Being a Spectator, is a show created by Lectourois Yves Marc. “In 50 years in the business, I have met audiences from all over the world,” explains the author. “I want to highlight what a spectator experiences, their ability to empathize or distance themselves from what is happening on stage . What is the part of culture?

The show was created in the Gers and is based on an inversion of point of view: “we always talk about a good actor, a great production, we rarely hear about a good audience,” insists Yves Marc. However, between actors, how many times have we said: what a magnificent audience this evening! Or: what a bad audience!

At the Avignon festival

Public: Instructions for use, or the art of being a spectator therefore suggests reversing the focus and questioning the art of being… public. It will be presented at the Festival Off d’Avignon 2024, at the Théâtre Transversal, on odd days at 10:45 a.m. from June 29 to July 21. Then, it will be performed in Toulouse, in September at the Théâtre Jules-Julien.

Table ronde

Yves Marc will organize a round table on “The art of the spectator” on Thursday July 4 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Maison Jean-Vilar.

Between empathy and distancing, what happens in the transmission between the stage and the room, even in the intimacy of the body? Is the spectator aware of the intimate modifications brought about by the reception of a show?

Echoing Public: Instructions for use, or the art of being a spectator, this round table aims to address these fascinating questions, with the support of discoveries in neuroscience and the latest research work, by confronting experiences from different artistic backgrounds.

The event will be hosted by Jean-Baptiste Raze, curator of the BnF branch of Maison Jean Vilar, alongside Anne Astolfe, director of the Jacques-Lecoq international school, Yves Marc, Gaëtan Rivière, head of research at the National Center for Circus Arts, Gabriele Sofia, doctor in theater studies, teacher-researcher at the University of Rome 3.
