Oskar Freysinger: “Democracy is threatened by a kind of totalitarianism that does not live up to its name”

It all started with a sentence, or almost. That of Josep Borrell, the vice-president of the European Commission, describing Europe as a garden and pointing out that most of the rest of the world is a jungle. From this formula was born the animal, the latest work by Oskar Freysinger, published by Editions Selena. Taking the opposite view from Josep Borrell’s remarks, the former UDC tribune imagines a jungle trying to become civilized. A “joyful decadence”, a “delirious story”, in the words of the author, which is above all a critical dystopia of current society and its supposed excesses. “I try to imagine where we are heading, before sketching out a way out,” says the former Valais state councilor. Recovered from open heart surgery, undergone in mid-April, Saviésan welcomes us to his home. Seven years after his forced political retirement, his legendary ponytail has not left him. Neither does his verve.
