South African choreographer Robyn Orlin gives two performances of “How can we flower in a salt desert?”, Thursday June 27 and Friday June 28, at the Garonne theater. Poetics and politics.

In northern Chile, the Atacama Desert blooms once a decade and it’s an event. A few kilometers away, in Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni never flowers. Through the magic of spectacle, on another continent, several thousand kilometers away, South African choreographer Robyn Orlin shows how dance manages to create on sterile soil.

“How can you flower in a salt desert?” is the breathtaking spectacle of a flowering occurring in hostile lands. A piece of plastic beauty between captivating songs, catchy dances and colorful videos, performed by dancers, a musician and a singer with a powerful voice.

Sand turns into flowers

“Heading north from Cape Town is the town of Okiep and its township, where extreme poverty is set against a beautiful and haunting semi-desert landscape,” explains Robyn Orlin. “That’s where I had the pleasure of working and learning a lot with the Garage Dance Ensemble, created and directed by Alfred Hinkel and John Linden.”
This show demonstrates that where the earth seems unproductive, curiously life can be reborn. Like on the soil of Okiep which is covered, every year, with thousands of flowers by a happy miracle of biodiversity.

Thursday June 27 at 8 p.m. and Friday June 28 at 8:30 p.m. at the Garonne theater (1, avenue du Château d’eau) in Toulouse. Prices: €10 to €22. Such. 05 62 48 54 77. www.theatregaronne.com
