President of the LFP, Vincent Labrune welcomed “excellent news for all Ligue 2 BKT clubs” without making the presidents concerned jump to the ceiling. Like Laurent Lairy (Stade Lavallois), they appreciated “that this call for tenders was not unsuccessful”, but remain “in the dark” regarding the envelope from which they will benefit.

A first step forward

You should know, in fact, that it is conditioned by the result of the Ligue 1 call for tenders. “The two amounts are added and Ligue 2 receives, in net, 18% of the total amount of rights,” said explained Laurent Lairy to our colleagues from France Bleu Mayenne.

Like its 17 competitors for the 2024-2025 season, Pau FC sees its budget conditioned by TV rights. He received 3.7 million during the 2022-2023 Ligue 2 season (including 750,000 euros via CVC, an investment fund partner of the LFP). While he will resume training this Monday 1is July 2024, he hopes that the situation will be resolved quickly to move forward with his recruitment (see box).

The acquisition of the rights to Ligue 2 was an important element in the distribution contract which links beIN to Canal+, the historic broadcaster of French football, but which refuses to participate in any negotiations on the rights to Ligue 1.

Plan A, plan B

This refusal prevents the LFP from setting up a plan A for the rights to the first division, a 100% Ligue 1 channel supported by beIN and distributed exclusively by Canal+ for nearly 700 million euros annually. But the encrypted channel assures that such a project was never presented to it, neither by the League nor by beIN.

The LFP is therefore considering a plan B, a 100% Ligue 1 channel, which it would create itself, with or without the support of BeIN, but which it would distribute non-exclusively to Internet service providers (ISPs). ) to broadcasters, Amazon, DAZN or even Canal+, to Internet channel distributors.
