The future gendarmerie of Bubry, in Morbihan, was the target of hostile tags on the night of November 16 to 17, 2024. This act of vandalism, which damaged a recently renovated facade, raises questions about the impunity from which it seems to benefit a radicalized fringe of the far left, increasingly active in Brittany.
Explicit slogans and a degraded facade
The inscriptions found on the building under construction included slogans like “ACAB” (“All Cops Are Bastards”), “We don’t want cops”, and an ironic version, “All Cats Are Beautiful “. These messages, painted in red and black, reflect explicit hostility towards the police.
The building, intended to accommodate a temporary brigade of gendarmes from 2025, had just benefited from a facade renovation. A complaint was filed by the mayor of the town.
The municipality's technical services quickly covered the tags
Investigations opened following these incidents rarely result in convictions, reinforcing a feeling of impunity. These actions, often attributed to small far-left groups, are part of a climate of exacerbated ideological opposition.
A gendarmerie, direct response to residents’ requests
The establishment of a new brigade in Bubry aims to strengthen local security in an area facing increasing incivility and crime. This project is a direct response to the needs expressed by residents, who want a reinforced police presence to deter acts of delinquency.
However, this act of vandalism reflects an ideological opposition that goes beyond simple local discontent. The mayor, Roger Thomazo, hopes that the authorities will be able to identify and punish the perpetrators, while reaffirming the importance of the gendarmerie as a pillar of public security.
