Rennes. Wednesdays at Thabor, a family and resolutely local program from July 3 to 24

The first four Wednesdays of July, Skeudenn Bro Roazhon takes over the green theater at Thabor Park. The federation of Breton cultural associations once again presents the artistic creations of the Celtic and Bagadou circles of the country of Rennes. Tourist and family events that will delight young and old.

A tradition since the 1980s, Thabor Wednesdays are back this year on Wednesdays July 3, 10, 17 and 24 at Parc du Thabor. Over the years, they have become essential summer events for Skeudenn Bro Roazhon. For Kémo Veillon, director of Skeudenn, it is the festival most representative of what the associations of the federation do in terms of artistic content. “The programming remains quite similar from one year to the next but it’s an opportunity for everyone to offer something new. It maintains a certain vitality in the associations.” It is also a trial run for the Celtic and Bagadou circles in the Rennes region who subsequently begin the competition period.

This year, the public will be able to discover more than 25 different shows. Since the 2021 edition, Skeudenn has allowed many emerging artists and professionals from the Breton scene to perform. “We are committed wherever possible to promoting the professionalization of young artists in the region” explains Kémo Veillon. For this edition of the festival, the public will be able to discover Neizh, a group made up of students from the traditional section of the Pont Supérieur on Wednesday July 17, as well as Initium on Wednesday July 24.

The festival will open its doors every Wednesday at 7 p.m. To attend the shows, adults will have to pay the modest sum of €3 per evening. “We want to remain accessible. We have clearly seen with inflation that attendance at events is falling. People no longer “consume” culture in the same way”. In the tense political and economic context, the director of Skeudenn hopes to perpetuate what is being done in the association before making plans for the comet: “economically, the costs have increased, politically, it is becoming complicated. There are fewer and fewer guarantees as to the sustainability of this type of cultural calendar.” He is nevertheless delighted with the dynamism of Rennes youth “we see that young people here take a lot of ownership of events, it’s also a real vector of creation… it’s what gives us the motivation to continue”. After a month of July which promises to be intense, the Skeudenn team will take a month of well-deserved vacation before getting down to preparing the Yaouank festival, scheduled for November 8 to 23.
