Pikes Peak. “The car suddenly stopped, 500 m after the start”: Romain Dumas won with his electric pick-up without beating his record

Hired by Ford, Romain Dumas won the 102nd edition of the Pikes Peak hill climb on Sunday June 23, one of the oldest automobile competitions on the planet and, without doubt, the most eccentric of all.

The great series continues. The Alesian champion thus signs his fifth absolute victory on this mountain in Colorado, where he won for the first time in 2014.

Credited with a time of 8’53”553 at the end of the 20 km climb towards a finish line located at the incredible altitude of 4305 m, he won the event overall ahead of the Italian multiple champion of Europe Christian Merli, well known to the Gard public for his victories in the Col Saint-Pierre hill climb, and the Spanish Hyundai rally driver Dani Sordo.

A review “mixed”

With this time, Romain Dumas, however, remains far from the absolute record for the event, which he has held since his victory in 2018 with Volkswagen. He provided the explanation once extricated from his Ford SuperTruck catapulted by the 1400 hp of its three electric motors.

“It was an extremely difficult and stressful climb because the car suddenly stopped 500 m after the start,” he revealed. Fortunately I managed to reset the startup procedure to get going again, but after wasting at least half a minute. If the results are mixed because of this, we were there to win our category and if possible the general. It’s done !”
