The Cometz de Metz were finally able to play their first matches of the season at home in D1 Baseball this Sunday. Shane Priest’s men, however, were subjected to the law of the Rouen Huskies.

Finally ! After multiple matches canceled or postponed, mainly due to bad weather conditions, the Cometz de Metz were finally able to play their first matches of the season at home. “ It’s a pleasure to play on our pitch, in front of our fans. All the volunteers did a lot of work to make the field good for playing”greets player-coach Shane Priest.

Authors of a good start to the season, the Messins. had a lot to do this Sunday against the Rouen Huskies, one of the heavyweights of D1 Baseball. The day unfortunately ended with two defeats, one of which was very controversial.

Frustrating scenario

In the lead during the start of the first match of the day (4-2, 3rd round), the Cometz suffered the lightning of the visitors, more than inspired at bat in the 5th round (4-6). Nevertheless, in line with their last performances, the locals held on (5-6, 6th round) and remained in the race, until a final round which sparked controversy…

In the 9th inning, while a Rouen player was on third base, one of the umpires sanctioned the Metz pitcher with a « balk » (an illegal feint). As a result, the visitors pocketed the seventh point (5-7), practically sealing the fate of the match. Enough to enrage the public, the Cometz officials, but also Shane Priest, who was at the throw. “In this situation, the referee told me that I had stopped my throwing movement, that I was not fluid enough according to him. It’s the first time I’ve seen that, it’s a bit weird but that’s how it is… It’s part of the sport”regrets Priest.

A most frustrating scenario for the Cometz de Metz, perhaps affected, who were unable to do better during the second meeting of the day, lost 2-6. Shane Priest’s protégés will have the opportunity to rediscover the taste of victory next weekend, with a trip to Sénart on Sunday June 30. “We’ve done almost nothing but good things this year. It’s up to us to stay in the right mentality and the right spirit”puts the technician into perspective.
