Lhe video broadcast by the mayor and his teams announcing the creation of a “public tranquility center” has visibly escaped some people. This Thursday, June 20, at the turn of a decision modifying the main budget of the city, the opposition, in the person of Frédéric Dutin and Céline Piot, summarizes: “It is therefore a question of arming the municipal police”. By September or October, according to our information.

The mayor, Charles Dayot, confirms: “I assume that I made this decision without having submitted it to a public debate. I know how we can exploit the subject, when it has no reason to be. »

Defying the mayor’s predictions, Frédéric Dutin announced: “We are not in a dogmatic opposition and we are going to vote on this deliberation. We must ensure that agents are more protected and better respected. »

“We’re not in Chicago”

He continues: “Today, there is a feeling of insecurity that exists among the population. Seeing armed municipal police can ease that feeling. But this imposes on us all a greater responsibility which weighs on the community. It’s not nothing. We want these staff to benefit from appropriate training, as in-depth as possible. And we will be vigilant on these points. » The security assistant specifies that the agents, unanimously volunteers, “will follow two training courses per year compared to only one for the national police. »

Confirmation is given that the “12 agents have all just completed their shooting training this week,” says the chief magistrate. No pun intended, it’s a real obstacle course. This is not taken lightly. We’re not in Chicago. Life is good in Mont-de-Marsan. The idea is not to compete, but to give them the means to take on their new missions. »

If arming the municipal police is not a first in the department, having a motorized brigade is, however, completely new. “Two agents have been trained and will be able to patrol in a Yamaha by the end of the year,” we learn.

A public peace center

Another major novelty is the recruitment of two rural guards. “Not those in De Funès’ films,” laughs the mayor, before specifying that they will be able to intervene in environmental offenses. » In fact, the country guards are sworn in and have judicial powers. They can take on prevention and surveillance missions but also report municipal police, traffic, environmental, national parks, dangerous dogs, wild fauna and flora offenses, etc.

According to our information, two rural guards, three municipal police officers and a police chief are in the process of being recruited. Added to this are the six public highway surveillance officers (ASVP) already on duty. This expanded team will be positioned in the premises of the municipal police. In addition to some work to push the walls, the place will be renamed the Public Peace Pole.
