This is a new decree which has just been issued by the prefect of Indre, Thibault Lanxade. The prefectural town of Indre has been the subject, for many months, of bans linked to the consumption of alcohol on public roads. In July 2024, following four murders committed in the city, the prefecture went so far as to ban the sale of alcohol in the city center.

The measure taken by the prefect on Tuesday, November 12 is less. For three months, until February 12, 2025 inclusive, it will be prohibited to consume alcohol in the streets, except on the terraces of authorized establishments. “We want to limit consumption in the street, sometimes by marginalized people, which leads to dangerous behavior”explains Thibault Lanxade, prefect of Indre.

One of the causes of this new decree, already put in place during the summer and during the Olympic Games, is the violent fight which occurred in front of the station on Friday November 9. Two men were sentenced to prison.

The increase in accidents also targeted

Among the reasons given by the prefecture: “the very sharp increase in road accidents in the center of Châteauroux”. The prefecture recorded, as of November 15, 133 traffic accidents having taken place in the urban area, including 8 caused by alcohol. “an increase of 8%” specifies the prefect of Indre. Most recently, on November 15, a collision took place on Boulevard Saint-Denis. A car hit a second, one of the vehicles ended up in a wall. But the accident that led to a 20-year-old driver being taken to hospital for inspection was not caused by alcohol.

The prefectural authority, on the other hand, hopes to limit the number of aggravating factors by once again banning the consumption of alcohol in order to reduce “troubles and nuisances”and more serious facts. The prefecture recalls in the same decree that “the number of unauthorized carrying and possession of weapons recorded by law enforcement doubled between 2022 and 2024”.
