The public prosecutor opens this information under “violence resulting in death without the intention of causing it by a person holding public authority”, the prosecutor said in a press release.
The municipal police officer responsible for the shooting was released following his police custody, which was lifted on Thursday evening, according to the same source. Aged 47, Yahya, who lived on the street, was fatally shot in the chest by the municipal police officer.

Several dozen people, mainly from the Ivorian community of which the deceased was a member, gathered Friday afternoon at the scene of the incident. “He was nice, the guy, he slept in his car, he didn’t bother anyone”, Diabate Demba gets angry while addressing the small assembly. Like many residents present, the man who has lived in the neighborhood for 40 years denounces the carrying of weapons by municipal police officers. The outgoing deputy for the constituency, Bastien Lachaud (LFI), pleaded for more training for police officers “so that they can, faced with a screwdriver, find another way to subdue the person rather than lethal shots”.

According to the story given on Wednesday by prosecutor Éric Mathais, the police were called at 8:20 a.m. for a man who had struck a cleaning agent at Plaine Commune Habitat five times with a screwdriver. While responding to the scene, one of the national police officers was attacked by the man, whoi “tried to punch him through the window” of the vehicle and “managed to injure him in the arm”.

Also present on site, “a municipal police officer from the commune of Aubervilliers was patrolling with two colleagues. In circumstances which remain to be determined, the municipal police officer fired in the direction of the perpetrator, hitting him in the chest”, wrote the prosecutor in a previous press release released on Wednesday. The cleaning agent and the national police officer left the hospital, said Éric Mathais.

Friday afternoon, the exchanges of those close to Yahya oscillated between anger and sadness, often punctuated by calls for a vote for the legislative elections. “See what a municipal police force is under the right,” vituperates the opposition municipal representative Sofienne Karroumi in the middle of the people gathered. “Imagine what it will be like under the far right,” he adds. Without saying a word, a woman soberly attaches a small yellow flower to the traffic sign planted in front of the pedestrian crossing where the man died Wednesday morning.
