A mother and her daughter enjoyed a walk on the banks of Lake Bourget, near Aix-les-Bains (Savoie), Sunday June 9, 2024. But the outing turned into a nightmare the following days. Both saw large blisters appear on their skin, says The Dauphiné Libéré .

An allergic reaction?

However, the mother and daughter did not swim in this lake. They simply soaked their hands and legs. The next day, burning and a feeling of heat appeared. The blisters started to form that evening. These “had become gigantic”according to the mother.

Worried, she first went to a pharmacy, where she was told she had an allergy. But the blisters continued to grow, forcing the mother and daughter to go to the emergency room. They were prescribed “corticosteroid cream and allergy medication”.

No report to the ARS

According to Marie-Odile Riou-Gotta, dermatologist at the Métropole Savoie Hospital Center, interviewed by BFMTV it could be phytophotodermatoses. “It is the combination of contact with the toxic substance of a plant and exposure to the sun”, she explained. This type of reaction, also called meadow dermatitis, could explain the giant blisters.

Despite a night in Chambéry hospital and various treatments, the exact origin of the blisters remains unknown. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes ARS has, for its part, not been informed of similar cases concerning Lake Bourget. Today, the blisters have deflated and mother and daughter are being monitored by a nurse.
