How many women Prime Ministers and Minister-Presidents in Belgium?

How many women Prime Ministers and Minister-Presidents in Belgium?

Lhe elections of June 9 gave fairly clear results: MR and Les Engagés won on the French-speaking side, and N-VA and Vooruit on the Dutch-speaking side (if we don’t count PTB-PVBA & Vlaams Belang with whom no one wants to negotiate). These parties therefore embarked on various negotiations.

We saw this two days after the elections with the announcement of the presidents of the MR & Engagés, Georges-Louis Bouchez and Maxime Prévot, who since Monday have received a string of 250 intermediary bodies, associations… for the formation of the governments of Wallonia and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. In Brussels, David Leisterh, president of the Brussels MR, and Christophe De Beukelaer, president of the Engagés de la capital, on the French-speaking side, are discussing. While Groen Elke Van den Brandt invited the Dutch-speaking parties in Brussels to discuss.

Bart De Wever, president of the NV-A, presented this Tuesday his starting note to the Cd&V and Vooruit for the formation of the Flemish government. And his Informant report to the King of Belgium this Wednesday as part of the formation of the federal government.

Negotiations are being launched everywhere and everyone comes to the said negotiation table with grievances. This is therefore the moment that I choose to remind all this group to integrate an important request: it is high time to nominate women for the Top Political Jobs in Belgium. I am talking about the positions of Prime Minister, Flemish Minister-President, Minister-President of Wallonia and Minister-President of the Brussels Capital Region.

Assign media positions

So yes, there is Stéphanie D’Hose (Open Vld) as president of the Senate, Eliane Tillieux (PS) as president of the House of Representatives or even Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) in the Flemish Parliament. These are certainly important and well-paid positions in the Belgian political world, but they are not the ones that Belgians know. These are not media posts.

The outgoing Prime Minister is Alexander De Croo (Open VLD). The outgoing minister-presidents are Jan Jambon (NV-A) for Flanders, Elio Di Rupo (PS) for Wallonia, Rudi Vervoort (PS) for Brussels and Pierre-Yves Jeholet (MR) for the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. Two minister-presidencies went to women, that of the CoCof and that of the VGC, respectively for Barbara Trachte (Ecolo) and Elke Van den Brandt (Groen). Two entities of which the vast majority of the population is unaware. Again, two non-media positions.

Bringing Belgium into a more modern political era

My proposal is simple: let’s take Belgium to a new level. Yes, there are more and more women in parliaments. Yes, there are more and more women ministers, even in sovereign ministries such as Foreign Affairs or Defense. Yes, there are women at the head of the largest assemblies in the country. BUT it is now time to enter this century, the one where women – 51% of the population – occupy these famous TOPS JOBS. Not all of them obviously, but half of them and not just those who are not in the media.

Quotas to improve equality and diversity in culture, what do the parties think?

Because the future is not bright from this point of view: Bart De Wever wants to be Prime Minister, Jan Jambon would like to return to the Flemish minister-presidency, Georges-Louis Bouchez wants Wallonia and David Leisterh the head of Brussels. Oliver Paasch has already taken over the reins of the German-speaking Community.

So nothing is done. The hand is in the hands of the negotiators. It’s up to them to see if they want to break with their predecessors; if they want to bring Belgium into a more modern political era; if they want to give their rightful place to 51% of the Belgian population. And for no one to come and talk to me about skills above all, that would be insulting to Belgian female politicians.
