European fishing boats will leave Senegalese waters from November 17, 2024 following the non-renewal of the agreement signed in 2019 between Brussels and Dakar, announces a press release from the European Union (EU) dated November 12, 2024, consulted by Ouestaf News.

After awarding Senegal a yellow card due to failures in the fight against illegal, undeclared and unregulated (IUU) fishing on May 27, 2024, the European Commission considers that it will not consider renewing the partnership with Dakar as long as it there will be no “significant progress in this area”.

The European Commission indicates, however, that an evaluation of the results of the current agreement will be carried out with the Senegalese party after its expiration.

The EU also indicates, in its press release, that it has taken note of the commitments of the Senegalese authorities to combat IUU fishing. In this regard, she promised to support the State of Senegal in order to remedy the “weaknesses” noted in the control system of the fishing sector and products.

Between 2006 and 2014, the fishing agreement between Senegal and the European Union was suspended by mutual agreement for a “renegotiation of the conditions” of its implementation.
